Papua New Guinea has a unique coffee story. Originally planted in the 1920s with seeds from Jamaica’s legendary Blue Mountain Typica, PNG coffee has since developed its own distinct character. While large plantations still exist, today around 85% of PNG’s coffee comes from smallholder farmers who grow coffee in their household “coffee gardens.” These small plots, often just a few dozen trees alongside food crops, reflect PNG’s rich farming tradition and community-based production.
This B Grade lot from the Western Highlands is grown at around 1,600 masl and features a mix of traditional varieties such as Arusha, Bourbon, Mundo Novo, Catimor, and Caturra. The beans are washed, then sun- or machine-dried, producing a clean and vibrant cup.
In the cup: Expect aromas of roasted nuts, cocoa, prunes, and dark spices. Flavours of caramel and roasted nuts shine through, with a long cocoa nib aftertaste. Bright citric acidity and a medium, rounded body create a balanced, enjoyable coffee that is both approachable and versatile.
Ideal for medium to medium-dark roasts, bringing out either its fruity brightness or deeper chocolatey tones.
